What Are You Thankful for?

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We hope you’re having a great day with family and friends, as much as possible, considering the situation. Which makes me think even more today might be a good time to reflect and focus on some things for which I’m very grateful:

Cool fall colours, water to paddle, canoes, paddles, outfitters, warm underwear, rough and remote campsites, people who maintain campsites, campfires, that moment you turn away from the fire to warm your cold bum, water to swim, waterfalls, trails around waterfalls, finishing a portage, dry feet, re-sealable dog treat bags, granola bars, any warm food after a day of travel, light camp stoves, heavy conversations over dinner, large branches that fell over winter that make for a bonus cache of firewood on a busy campsite, water for cleaning, that one flat-enough spot almost big enough for a tent, tent flies and mesh windows, cool breezes on a warm day and warm breezes on a cold day, water drying sunlight, that one flat rock that saves you from a wet foot at the take out, island sites, a beach site when you’re pretty sure they don’t have those around here, a hat that you can wear a lot longer than you think you could, socks that you can wear a lot longer than you should, water for cleaning your … “adventurous” dog, big greasy meals on the way home, white paint to hide your canoe scratches, the stories tied to all the visible scratches, strong straps, long lasting gear, stable canoes, breaks in the headwind, that one day the wind was behind you, that other time when no one was around when you fell, all the maps filled with hope for next year …

… And of course, our good friends, furry or otherwise, to share it all with us.
