Hi ya! I’m contemplating my first solo (plus canine) canoe camping trip in Kawartha Highlands. Have you been? I’d like to do something easy peasy lemon squeezy with no portaging and no current. I’m wondering if you could recommend which part of Kawartha Highlands or another area in Ontario that would be a good fit. I’ve done lots of backpack camping with my doggo, Cosette, but the canoe is a whole new ball game.

Thanks in advance! TJ

Hi! There’s a few spots in the Kawarthas you can canoe to camp with no portaging, although they’re not terrible long routes (which might be a good thing?). Check out unlostify.com to peruse their maps. Bottle Lake, for example, is a short paddle that will introduce your dog to the experience without getting you too far away. Like many areas in Algonquin, you’ll be secluded, but not too secluded in case you need not be. Obviously Algonquin will have some spots, and even Killarney (book early), and the south portion of Massassauga (through Pete’s Place access point as the northern access point has portages).
